At Least There'll Be a Helpful Smile In Every Aisle

Drake University announced today that Hy-Vee, Inc., will serve as the presenting sponsor of the Drake Relays in a partnership that promises to enhance and elevate the already sterling reputation of the event. “The Drake Relays is one of the crown jewels of track and field – an event that has transcended athletic competition to become a true community celebration,” says Randy Edeker, chairman, CEO and president of Hy-Vee, Inc. “Hy-Vee is thrilled to partner with Drake as the university builds on a proud tradition and ushers in an exciting new era for the Relays.” Part of that exciting new era is more than half a million dollars in purse money for a field that currently features 16 medalists from the 2012 London Olympic Games and a world record holder already confirmed to compete at the Relays with more to potentially join the star-studded field at a later date. Those Olympians and professional athletes will compete in ‘London Rematches’ for a $50,000 purse in the running events and a $25,000 purse in the field events. The purses are the largest for an event in the United States and $20,000 more than is offered by the Diamond League, the sport’s top professional circuit. “Our relationship with Hy-Vee will further the legacy of the Drake Relays as never imagined before,” says Brian Brown, the Franklin P. Johnson Director of the Drake Relays. “The athletes and fans will be truly inspired by the level of competition at the Blue Oval for the 104th running of America’s Athletic Classic. I have never been this excited about the athletes that you will see compete at the Drake Relays this year.” The Relays and those athletes, including 2012 Olympic gold medalists Aries Merritt, Felix Sanchez, Renaud Lavillenie, Jenn Suhr, and Brittney Reese, will be featured on ESPN2 with 90 minutes of action being broadcast to nearly 100 million homes in prime time. In addition to the enhanced level of professional competition inside Drake Stadium, the partnership with Hy-Vee will also invigorate the Relays’ road races with $120,000 in prize money awarded to the top finishers in the Wellmark Grand Blue Mile, 10-kilometer race, half marathon, and a new 6-kilometer race staged in conjunction with Character Counts in Iowa. The 6-kilometer distance is representative of Character Counts in Iowa’s Six Pillars of Character – Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Character Counts in Iowa will receive a portion of the proceeds from the 6-kilometer race. “The new Hy-Vee road races will take new prominence with a finish in the stadium on Sunday and prizes like we’ve never seen before,” Brown said. “This will be a Drake Relays that you do not want to miss.” Those road races will continue the Drake Relays and Hy-Vee’s long-time support and commitment to health and athletics and ensure that the Relays remain an integral part of the Des Moines community. “There’s no better partner than Hy-Vee to help take the Drake Relays to a place of extraordinary greatness and success,” says Drake Director of Athletic Sandy Hatfield Clubb. “Our shared commitment to excellence and the health and vitality of our community makes this a perfect partnership.” Hy-Vee’s sponsorship of the Drake Relays is one of many examples of the company’s long-standing relationship with Drake University, which includes a $300,000 gift this past July to create the Hy-Vee Student Learning Commons in the Morgan E. Cline Atrium for Pharmacy and Science. "We are extremely grateful to Hy-Vee for their generosity and commitment in helping to take the Drake Relays to the next level," says Drake University President David Maxwell. "The Relays have enjoyed the support and engagement of the Des Moines community; Hy-Vee has taken a giant step in making it a truly collaborative undertaking. We look forward to our strengthened partnership, which will ensure that the Relays continue to be one of the world's premier track and field events." The 104th installment of what promises to be one of the greatest Drake Relays in its storied history is scheduled for April 24-27 at Drake Stadium. Nov. 24 – vs. Rice, W 77-66

Drake Women Overcome Big Deficit, Then Lose, 76-70

Drake's women's basketball team overcame a 22-point deficit against George Mason Saturday, but then lost, 76-70, in its final game at the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. Drake led, 68-67, after a jumper in the paint by Alyssa Marschner (Plymouth, Minn.) with 1:38 left, but the Patriots got four points from Rahneeka Saunders down the stretch to help hold off the Bulldogs.

“We shook things up with Mary Pat (Specht) and Dilonna (Johnson) in the lineup to start the second half and came out with great energy,” said Drake coach Jennie Baranczyk. “However, as a young team, we have to learn to put two halves of basketball together and close out these [types of] games. We will eventually figure it out and win one of these.”

The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround early next week with a trip  to face the Iowa State  (4-0) at Ames. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.

Jordan Clarke's Tournament-Record 18 Rebounds Help Buldogs Fry Rice, 77-66, In Anaheim. 5 Biulldogs In Double Scoring Figures [Clarke Has 15]. Xavier Next Opponent

Five Bulldogs scored in double figures for the second consecutive night, as Drake's basketball team pulled away from Rice, 77-66, in second round of the DIRECTV Classic Friday night.
Jordan Clarke

Jordan Clarke (Rockville, Md.) stole the show for the Bulldogs with his third double-double in a row for Drake (2-2), notching 15 points and grabbing a career-high 18 rebounds. His 18 rebounds also set a tournament record, previously held by Diamon Simpson of St. Mary's in 2008, who had 17 against Cal State Fullerton. The senior also had four assists, two steals and two blocks.

"He [Clarke] was really a beast," Drake  coach Mark Phelps said. 'He dominated the glass he had half of our rebounds. He rebounded at a high level and gave us all he had tonight and he was able to handle Rice's Tamir Jackson defensively.'

Ben Simons (Cadillac, Mich.) scored a team-high 18 points to lead the Bulldogs.  Seth VanDeest (Bettendorf) had a strong showing in the post to complement Clarke with 12 points and eight boards of his own. In his encore performance in front of his hometown crowd, Gary Ricks (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored 10 points and had three assists. Chris Hines (Houston, Texas) added 11 points. As a team, Drake shot 46 percent from the field and 44 percent from the three-point arc.

The Bulldogs stole momentum in the late stages of the game, taking advantage of an 11-4 run that lasted 2:44, to assume a 10-point lead with under four minutes remaining in the game. Until that point, the teams traded baskets, with neither team gaining a significant advantage.

'I was impressed with our team's resolve and toughness," Phelps said. "Rice did a great job at both ends and makes you guard for long possessions. Then when they score at the end of those possessions, that can really let the air out. But I thought we demonstrated toughness and the ability to bounce back."

Senior guard Tamir Jackson had a game high 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting to pace the Owls offense. Julian DeBose added 12 points and grabbed a team-high nine boards. Rice's record is 1-4.

Drake held the edge at halftime, leading 34-30 by using a 10-0 run in the middle of the first half to regain the lead 22-18, after a scoring drought erased the Bulldogs' early lead.

The Bulldogs will conclude action in the tournament Sunday, facing Xavier of Cincinnati in the fifth place matchup at the Anaheim Convention Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CST and will be televised by ESPNU.  KRNT-AM radio at 1350 in Des Moines will handle the radio broadcast.

"I know Xavier pretty well and I've known Coach Mack for a long time," Phelps said. "I know what they do and they have a great tradition. They play really hard and they're going to be formidable and they have length and athleticism. It's going to take our best effort Sunday."

Rally By Drake's Women Falls Short, 69-64

A rally by Drake's women's basketball team fell short as the California-Irvine prevailed, 69-64, Friday in the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic at Las Cruces, N.M.

The Bulldogs fell behind by 13 points with just over 5 minutes left in the game, but fought back to cut the Anteaters' lead to 65-64, after Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo.) buried a three-pointer with 39 seconds left. After Drake called a timeout, the Anteaters’ Methlyn Onogomuho rebounded a miss by Jasmine Bernard and scored on a putback to extend the lead to 67-64 with 14 seconds tp gp/. Clark had a good look on a three-point attempt but it was long and the Anteaters pulled down the board with just two seconds on the clock and Drake was forced to foul. Pernilla Hanson hit two free throws to seal the game for UCI (1-4).

“We fought back, and I’m proud of the fight we showed,” Drake coach Jennie Baranczyk said. “But we have some work to do learning how to come ready to play out of halftime. Part of that is maturity with us being such a young team but we will continue to get better. We also have to fight on the boards and come up with some of those loose balls at the end of the game.”

Junior Mary Pat Specht (Shawnee, Kan.) had her best game in her first season at Drake (1-2) as she came off the bench to score 15 points. Stephanie Running (Oak Creek, Wis.) also had 15 points and added nine rebounds. Clark finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

“Mary Pat brought great energy off the bench today and I wish we could have gotten a few more touches for Stephanie especially at the end but she struggled with foul trouble,” Baranczyk said.

'If You Look At the Free Throws, That Was the Difference,' Drake's Mark Phelps Says After California Rallies for 73-70 Victory In Tournament At Anaheim

Drake's basketball team fell in the  final minute to California, 73-70, in the opening round of the DIRECTV Classic Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif. The Bulldogs' Jordan Clarke (Rockville, Md.) notched his second straight double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while Ben Simons (Cadillac, Mich.), Seth VanDeest (Bettendorf), Richard Carter (Detroit, Mich.), and
Gary Ricks, Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif.) each scored 13 points, but their scoring could not hold off the Golden Bears’ late charge. Justin Cobbs recorded 21 points followed by 15 from Allen Crabbe, almost all of which came down the stretch, to lead Cal past Drake in the closing minutes of the game. “It was obviously a hard-fought game and when it counted the most, they made the plays that counted,” Drake coach Mark Phelps said. “If you look at the free throws, that ended up being the difference. We both had 26 attempts and they made 20 of them while we made five.” Drake led by as many as nine points with seven minutes to play at 64-55, but Cal rallied and retook the lead at 67-66 with 4:20 remaining.  thanks to a 12-2 run, fueled by the high-scoring guard combo of Crabbe and Cobbs. “Certainly it’s a painful loss,” Phelps said. “We went into a scoring drought then and I thought that most of the game we did a good job with our transition defense, but during that stretch, Crabbe got into the open floor.” In the second half, the Blue and White was able to take its first lead since the opening minutes following back-to-back technical fouls called on Richard Solomon and Cal head coach Mike Montgomery at 15:34 in the second half with Drake trailing, 44-43, that helped start a 13-6 run Bulldog run to build a three-possession lead with Simons scoring seven of those points before Cal rebounded from the charge. Drake faced similar adversity in the first half when Cal jumped to a 23-13 and  the Bulldogs responded with an 11-1 run in the middle of the period to keep the game in control, knotting the score at 24 apiece with 4:11 remaining in the first. Each team kept pace with each other, resulting in a 33-33 tie at halftime. Ricks, playing in his hometown, helped keep the Bulldogs on the Bears’ heels with 12 of his 13 points coming in the opening half. Drake faces Rice in the second round at 8:30 p.m. CST Friday. Rice dropped its opening game to Georgia Tech, 54-36. The Drake-Rice game will be televised by ESPNU.
