Valley takes a 7-2 record into Wednesday's class 4-A first round game against Ames [4-5] in the state high school football playoffs. The obnoxious Ames public address announcer won't be needed, so Valley's fans hope he stays home. Unbeaten and No. 1-ranked West Des Moines Dowling opens against the hapless Des Moines Lincoln team that was thrashed by Valley, 76-6, in Friday night's regular-season finale. Ankeny [8-1], one of the state's hottest 4-A teams, will be without quarterback Blaine Hawkins when it plays Indianola [5-4]. Hawkins' season ended in Friday night's regular-season finale [a 30-10 Ankeny victory] at Southeast Polk when he sustained a broken collarbone. Hawkins was having a tremendous junior season, and now must wait six weeks for the collarbone to heal before he can join Ankeny's basketball team. One of the most lopsided first round matchups sends Davenport North, a team with a 1-8 record, into a game against Bettendorf [9-0]. No wonder the Iowa High School Association's playoff format needs changing in 2016.
