After seeing some of Iowa's very impressive 85-67 basketball victory today over Michigan, I have some thoughts. I'm ready to call the Hawkeyes the second-best team [behind Michigan State] in the second-best conference [behind the Big 12] in the nation. Had it not been for the disappointing and frustrating 71-69 overtime loss at home to Michigan State, I'd label Iowa the best team in the Big Ten. But the fact that the Hawkeyes trail the Spartans by 3 games in the standings and must face them March 6 in East Lansing, Mich., I'm sticking with the belief that they can't catch Michigan State in the Big Ten's regular-season race, even though I certainly don't think the Spartans are invincible and aren't in the 'super' class nationally,[heck, maybe there are no super teams in this age of parity in collegiate basketball]. Iowa clearly was the superior team today. The Hawkeyes completely outplayed Michigan, and Fran McCaffery clearly outcoached John Beilein. Iowa should have smooth sailing on the schedule--well, maybe not smooth sailing, but at least they'll be favored--in six of their final seven games leading up to the Big Ten tournament. The only game I think the Hawkeyes will lose is the one at Michigan State. Indeed, McCaffery has done some wonderful things in restoring Iowa's strong basketball tradition. Now, hopefully, he can quit throwing those ridiculous temper tantrums [most of them planned] that have attracted national attention--the wrong kind of attention. He's too good a coach and his players are too talented and sensible for McCaffery to continue getting silly technical fouls that occasionally get him ejected from, and suspended from, games. Iowa's basketball program is too classy to have those things happen anymore.
