The best girls' basketball team in a spectacular Valley High School athletic history rode a 20-point performance by senior guard Madi Agey and 19 by junior guard Grace Vamder Weide to a 59-54 victory tonight over Waukee at the Bill Coldiron Fieldhouse on the Valley campus. With postseason tournament action on the horizon, the Tigers improved their record to 19-1. Valley's players have been outspoken about their desire to make it to the state tournament atWells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines, and they've fallen short just once during the regular season, losing at crosstown West Des Moines rival Dowling. The Valley-Waukee game was such a big deal that the paper even sent a reporter and a photographer to cover it. The story and picture made it all the way to the last page of the 8-page sports section. The photographer wasn't the talented Bill Neibergall, but I've pointed out to West Des Moines officials, including the city manager, mayor and superintendent of schools, plus Valley's athletic director and coaches, that you can't expect miracles from the paper anymore. The most surprising thing was that the paper even knew that the game was being played. It was rescheduled after being called off last week because of--what else?--snow. Usually, the people at the paper are the last to find out if or why games are postponed because of bad weather. They also rarely know when the games are finally played. A number of Valley games have not been covered at all this season by the paper. The Tigers, as well as plenty of other high school teams, get horrible treatment from the paper. Yet, the publisher and editors keep telling their readers that there's more in the paper these days. Actually, of course, there is less. Considerably less.
