Valley's record-setting girls' basketball team clobbered Urbandale, 64-40, tonight for its 20th victory in 21 games [with the only loss to Dowling]. It was Senior Night for the girls in the Bill Coldiron Fieldhouse, with the senior players and their parents honored after the game on the court. Following the game, the players, coaches and family members celebrated the finish of the regular season in the school cafeteria, and preparations were already starting for the Tigers' opening regional tournament game. They again play Urbandale in the Bill Coldiron Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 in the tournament opener. We stayed for just half of the Valley-Urbandale boys' game that followed Valley's huge girls' victory. The Tigers' boys' team continues to underachieve with Jeff Horner's coaching, and fell behind quickly while under assault from Urbandale's offense and defense. We [as well as many others in the Valley crowd] headed for home when the Tigers proved they couldn't hang in against Urbandale in the first couple of quarters. Urbandale wound up winning, 72-67--sending Valley's record to a disappointing 12-7. One of the secrets to the success of Valley's girls, with the coaching of Joe Sigrist, is the team's tenaciousness. The Tigers make up for a lack of size with hard play at both ends of the court. I've seen a number of Valley boys' games, and tenaciousness is not one of that team's strengths.
