As far as I'm concerned, the scantily-clad women, loosely referred to as cheerleaders, on the sidelines at National Football League games have outworn their welcome. It's not that I have anything at all against scantily-clad women. What I mean is that the scantily-clad women on the sidelines at NFL games are not cheerleaders at all, and I don't know who started calling them cheerleaders. I mean, when was the last time you heard an actual cheer generated by so-called cheerleaders at a professional [or collegiate] football game? The scantily-clad women at those games are adult females either auditioning for professional dancing jobs or postgame dates with the players. If the NFL was looking for the perfect time to rid itself of the cheerleading program, it's now. Newser says the latest lawsuit from an NFL cheerleader details a familiar-sounding pay scale: Members of the Jets' "Flight Crew" make what amounts to $3.77 an hour, says a former dancer with the squad. The woman identified as Krystal C. tells the New York Post that the cheerleaders make $150 per game and $100 for other special events, but they don't get paid for practices or transportation. "We worked so much and it was so time-consuming," she says. "We are professional dancers—and we should be compensated that way." “The Jets, while paying millions of dollars to its male athletes for a single season of work, have historically and currently pay less than minimum wage to its cheerleading staff,” says the lawsuit, as quoted by the Daily News. Krystal C. says the team should pay the cheerleaders at least $8.25 an hour, the minimum wage in New Jersey. The suit follows similar ones by cheerleaders from the Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, and Oakland Raiders. Like I said, now is the perfect time to fire all of the so-called cheerleaders.
