Shame On the Paper's Awful Health News Section
It was good to see the supplement "Your Local Health" in today's paper. That feature is sponsored by The Iowa Clinic, and it's in the paper one Sunday a month. Even though it's a supplement provided by a sponsor, it's the source of the best health news in the paper--which tells you a lot about the journalism business these days. After many decades of going without any health news, the paper took a stab at publishing a health section several years ago. It came with an editor, who was supposed to write a column with each weekly health section. The new health editor wrote one column. Repeat, one! After that, I think the health columnist quit and took a job at either Meredith Publishing or K-Mart. Then, a few months ago, the clown in charge of the health section wrote an item for the paper that asked readers what they wanted in the health section. He evidently got responses he couldn't fulfill (like stories other than How To Keep Your Bicycle Tires Inflated) or he got no responses at all. It wasn't long before the guy (who I think was named Tim something) bit the newspaper dust. He was fired, canned, laid off, sent packing or all of the above. Now the paper's Monday health section is worse than lousy. It's atrocious, filled with such hard-hitting health features as "Spring Is Here--It's Time To Cut Out the Carbs And Lose 10 Pounds" to "3 Easy Steps In Shaving Your Bikini Area." My Neighbor Al, the Health Nut, thinks the Register's health section is so bad that an amputation expert should be called in to remove it from all editions. Like I said, read today's "Your Local Health" supplement sponsored by The Iowa Clinic. It's the best health news in a paper that clearly should be doing better.
