It was free pie day at Village Inn yesterday, and the subject matter in our booth consisted of plenty of interesting items.
One was the mess involving the Los Angeles Clippers and their bush-league [soon-to-be-former-owner] Donald Sterling, who has received a lifetime banfrom the National Basketball Association and was fined $2.5 million by the league.
Mike Mahon, the former Drake sports information director who still keeps tabs on what's going on in collegiate and professional sports, said he thought it was ridiculous that the print or electronic media in Des Moines hadn't contacted Brian Sieman, the Valley High School graduate, 1998 Kansas University graduate and a former Drake football announcer [in 2001] and Des Moines Dragons' basketball announcer who now is the Clippers' play-by-play radio announcer, about the goings-on this week.
"You'd think some reporter from Des Moines would interview Sieman about the Clippers' situation," Mahon said.
A couple of hours later, KCCI-TV indeed did interview Sieman about what's been going on with the Clippers.
Here's a tweet Mahon sent following the channel 8 telecast:
Cookman said he had heard the KCCI interview with Sieman, adding he was happy the station got hold of the announcer.
Cookman told me has always thought highly of Sieman.
"I was Brian's counselor when he attended Valley," Cookman said, "and he is doing some outstanding work in sports broadcasting now."
For those wondering why the Des Moines
Register didn't, or hasn't, had any mention of Sieman on the Sterling matter, it's likely because no one there even knows who Brian Sieman is.
[Now that people there have read about Sieman in this column, they'll probably try to contact him for an interview].
How could the paper know anything about Sieman? No one there pays attention to Valley High School or to Drake football.
Not in the past 15 years, not now.
Indeed, today Mahon emailed Register sportswriter John Naughton with the message that the paper "blew it" by not interviewing Sieman.
Before joining the Clippers, Sieman was a broadcaster for the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA and the Minnesota Lynx of the women's professional basketball league. Earlier, Sieman had broadcast experience in the Continental Basketball Association, the International Basketball Association [doing the Des Moines Dragons' games], Drake, and 950 The Fan, the Flagship station for the Denver Nuggets.

When I returned home from the pie-fest, I had a message on my cell phone from Jay Cookman, a retired longtime educator at Valley and a former Drake football player. Cookman said he had heard the KCCI interview with Sieman, adding he was happy the station got hold of the announcer.
