This Isn't Looking Good: Missouri State's 4th Victory Of the Season Sends Drake's Missouri Valley Conference Record To 0-3 As Crowd Of 3,804 Watches At Knapp Center. Some Might Say It's Still Early, But Maybe That's Not the Case. It Could Be Later Than You Think

Three nights after losing an overtime heartbreaker on the Missouri Valley Conference road, Missouri State’s basketball team closed the deal. Answering each Drake run in the second half Saturday night, the Bears beat the Bulldogs 77-65 at the Knapp Center for their first road victory of the season. Senior guard Anthony Downing scored 26 points and freshman Gavin Thurman added 13 as MSU improved to 4-11 overall and 2-1 in the Valley. Drake fell to 6-8 and 0-3. Freshman Joey King scored 21 poins and had seven rebounds for Drake. Another freshman, Micah Mason, couldn't play for the Bulldogs because of an illness.   “We knew it was going  to be a hard-fought game,” Drake coach Mark Phelps said. “Missouri State has been playing really, really well and gaining a lot of confidence in their last three games. We were able to trim the lead down in the second half but just weren’t able to get enough stops in combination with conversions on our end to get over the hump.” Drake forward Ben Simons said, "We got back to within two points and then we didn’t get stops to keep the momentum and gave up a couple of drives to the basket for layups. When we get back in the game, we need to do a better job of sustaining our energy and that’s one thing we’ve got to work on.” Missouri State coach Paul Lusk, a former Iowa player, said, “We played our tails off the other night and it was great to see our guys respond,   Our three upperclassmen (Downing, Keith Pickens and Nathan Scheer) are playing their best basketball of the season.” Downing said the Bears didn’t hang their heads. “Not at all,” he said. “We came in with a lot of confidence and swagger. We should be 3-0 in the league.” Lusk said he put the onus on Downing, as the lone senior, to get his teammates in the right mindset.  “I put a lot of Downing before the game,” Lusk said. “I said, ‘You’ve got to be the toughest cat in the gym. And he was the toughest cat in the gym tonight.” MSU shot 51 percent from the field in beating Drake for the sixth straight time. For a while, it looked like it was going to be a runaway. The Bears led 36-20 at halftime after shooting 47 percent and holding the Bulldogs to 27 percent from the field. But the Bulldogs came roaring back, cutting the lead to 43-42 after Ben Simons’ jumper six mintues into the second half After a Bears’ missed shot, the Bulldogs had a chance to take the lead. But Keith Pickens blocked Jordan Clarke’s layup and MSU got a jumper from Downing and a Pickens dunk to push the lead back to five. Pickens scored six straight during the 8-0 run, but it wasn’t safe just yet for an MSU team searching for its first road victory of the season. Drake closed within 61-57 at the three-minute mark when Thurman fired in a 3-pointer. Drake wasn’t closer than five the rest of the way with MSU making 10 of 11 free throws to clinch the victory. Downing helped get the Bears going with 11 points in the first 12 minutes before he picked up his second foul and had to sit out the remainder of the first half. His 3-pointer was part of an 11-1 run that sent MSU to a 26-14 lead.
