Wichita State Keeps Drake Women Winless In Valley

Hot shooting and strong defense helped Wichita State defeat the Drake women’s basketball team, 70-51, Monday night in Wichita, Kan.

Ashley Bartow (Verona, Wis.) scored a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting to lead Drake (5-12, 0-6 Missouri Valley Conference). Stephanie Running (Oak Creek, Wis.) added eight points and four rebounds off the bench.

Wichita State (11-6, 5-0 Valley), in first place in the league, was led by Kelsey Jacobs and Jessica Diamond, who each had 14 points. The Shockers connected on 32-of-55 (58 percent) from the field and forced 23 turnovers and scored 24 points off those turnovers.

Wichita State built a 44-29 halftime lead, hitting 21-of-33 (64 percent) from the field, and forced 13 Drake turnovers and scored 15 points off those turnovers. Bartow set her career-high with nine first half points for the Bulldogs and Running had six points off the bench.

Drake trailed, 59-45, after Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo.) knocked down two free throws with 5:57 remaining in the game. Clark finished with 12 points. It would be as close as the Bulldogs would be as the Shockers won their fifth straight game.

The Bulldogs outrebounded the Shockers, 32-31. Junior forward Morgan Reid (Kansas City, Mo.) scored nine points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs return home for games against Bradley on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and against Northern Iowa on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. The women’s basketball alumni game will be played after the game against UNI.
