This is a very difficult one to figure. It's a classic bean-counters' disaster tale--straight from the Gannett Co. style book. After devoting a whopping amount of newspaper space this spring to stories [real feel-good stuff that appeared to be written by people from the school's sports information office] about Iowa's suddenly-successful baseball program, the Des Moines Register evidently couldn't [or wouldn't] scrape up enough money to fill the gas tank in the company car so a reporter could drive to Springfield, Mo., for the Hawkeyes' first NCAA tournament victory in 43 years. Instead, the Register used a story this morning from the Gannett-owned Springfield News-Leader after the Hawkeyes defeated Oregon, 3-1, in yesterday's regional game. This ridiculous lack of coverage after spending money to fly reporters all over the nation to cover Hawkeye and Cyclone football and basketball games [including numerous events in Texas] during the fall and winter.
