After Iowa's 21-14 loss to LSU in the Outback Bowl, I'm glad I don't have to report on football games like that anymore to earn a paycheck. A bunch of mentally-challenged zebras I wouldn't trust to officiate a touch football game in my backyard threatened to ruin the efforts of both teams. Thank goodness the players had more class than the flag-throwers and whistle-blowers. The Hawkeyes stormed back from a lackluster first half that saw them fall behind, 14-0. They gave it a strong effort in the last half, but couldn't quite get the job done against an LSU team that had a roster full of blue-chip athletes. But blue-chippers can do some dumb things on the field, too. And they can be outplayed sometimes, too. Say all you want about the 41-2 record LSU coach Les Miles has against non-Southeastern Conference opponents, an Iowa team whose starting quarterback was injured and standing on the sideline took it to Miles and his blue-chippers in the game's late stages. Bottom line: It's great to see that Kirk Ferentz's program is back. After a 4-8 finish in 2012, the Hawkeyes went 8-5 this season, and appear headed to bigger and better things in the future. It's obvious that Iowa football is fun again.
