Dan Callahan Goes To Bat for Bobby Tealer

By RON MALY

I hear from Dan Callahan a lot, especially during the basketball season.

Callahan is the former Drake player and assistant coach who lives in Sioux City. One of his immediate projects is trying to get former Bulldog Bobby Tealer named to Drake's impressive Double D list.

The Double D award is presented annually to Drake letterwinners for achievements in their chosen fields of endeavor and/or community service since leaving the university.

Since its inception in 1968, the Double D honor has been presented to nearly 250 former Drake letterwinners

Callahan mailed me a paper that shows photos of Tealer before and after he played at Drake, including one that illustrates how he was trying to stop Cincinnati's Oscar Robertson from scoring in a 1959 game.

The 1958-59 season was Maury John's first at Drake, and Robertson was the leader of a power Cincinnati team that then was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference along with the Bulldogs.

The Bearcats swept Drake in two games that season, winning in Des Moines, 97-60, and in Cincinnati, 73-52.

Also shown on the photo sheet sent to me by Callahan is Tealer's 1959 graduation picture from Drake.

Another, from 2006, shows when he was honored as one of the university's best basketball players in the previous 50 seasons.

Callahan said he has sent the same sheet of photos of Tealer to John Brown, the Drake assistant athletic director who oversees the Double D program.

I wasn't living in Des Moines when Tealer was playing for Drake, but if Callahan says Bobby deserves Double D recognition, I'm all for it.

Good luck, Bobby.

And keep up the good work, Dan.

Ray Giacoletti, Drake's present basketball coach, promised, "We'll get better" while addressing boosters today at the monthly Drake lunch at the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines.
Ray Giacoletti

Although he was clearly disappointed that the Bulldogs have lost their last two games to Bradley and Indiana State, Giacoletti said, "We have a 10-5 record, we're not 5-10."

The fans applauded after he said that because, when the season began, some of them figured the record would be closer to 5-10 than 10-5.

Although Drake was impressive in November and December, reality seems to have gripped the team early in the Missouri Valley Conference season.

The Bulldogs clearly have been outmanned in a number of games in Giacoletti's first season, but they have found ways to do some impressive things.

I wrote a few weeks ago that this is a Drake team that will upset some teams it has no business upsetting, and I still believe that's going to happen.

Giacoletti has the Bulldogs playing hard, and I feel they'll continue playing hard.

By the way, the chicken soup and apple pie were fantastic at the Sheraton.  Especially on a cold day like today.
