Drake Basketball Team's Exhibition Game Is Saturday

• Drake's men’s basketball team opens the 2012-13 season Saturday with its lone exhibition game of the season against Southwest Baptist. Tipoff is at 7:05 p.m. at the Knapp Center.
• The season begins in earnest next Saturday when William Jewell visits the Knapp Center.
• Drake enters Saturday’s exhibition after going 18-16 last season with a third-place finish in the Missouri Valley. The squad also advanced to postseason play for the second time under fifth-year  coach Mark Phelps with a CIT berth. The team advanced to the second round of the tournament.
• Southwest Baptist, a Division II program, went 18-12 last season and 11-9 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
• The Bearcats were picked to finish eighth in the 15-team league this season.
• Earlier this week, Drake was picked sixth in the MVC preseason poll while senior Ben Simons was selected to the preseason all-conference team.
• Drake returns five players who gained starting experience along with eight talented newcomers.
• The Bulldogs will also have the benefit of center Seth VanDeest, who missed the entire 2011-12 season with shoulder injuries.

Southwest Baptist Connection
• Drake assistant coach Stan Johnson is very familiar with the Bearcats, having served as an assistant coach at Southwest Baptist for three seasons from 2004-07.
• There he helped Southwest Baptist amass a 50-30 record under current coach Jeff Guiot.
• Johnson and Guiot’s relationship stretches back to Johnson’s playing days at Southern Utah, where Guiot was an assistant coach. Johnson finished his collegiate career at Bemidji State under Guiot and earned his first coaching position at Bemidji State on Guiot’s staff.

Bulldogs Picked Sixth in MVC Poll
• Drake was picked to finish sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference’s preseason poll. The Bulldogs finished with 184 points in the poll of the league’s coaches, media and communications personnel after finishing in a tie for third in the league last season.
