Drake's rowing team defeated Creighton in its annual fall dual on the Des Moines River Saturday morning. The Bulldogs won two of the three races to retain the trophy in the final race of Drake’s fall season.
The
Bulldogs Varsity Eight crew (Jacque Nowers-cox, Maggie Benhart,
Brittany Michael, Jessica Nightser, Bailey Berg, Andrea Piekarczyk,
Katie Serbin, Kelsey
Leahy and Sarah Laughlin) edged the Bluejays in a close race to seal
the win.
“I’m happy with how today went,” Drake coach
Charlie DiSilvestro said. “The team set goals before the season
and the first was to beat Creighton and retain the trophy. We had some
great races today and we always enjoy this annual event. We have a great
friendly rivalry with Creighton.”
The
Drake second varsity crew (Hannah Hennessy-cox, Monica Worsley, Brianna
Leinon, Alex Lueck, Leah Robison, Wenel Jais-Cross, Emily Householter,
Kristi Vann,
and Justine Choe) crossed the finish line ahead of Creighton.
The
Drake rowing team will be off for the next few months. The Bulldogs
will start the spring season at the Wichita State dual on March 16,
2013.
“Now
we enter our next section of training, which is a critical time for us
being off the water for the next three months,” DiSilvestro said. “We
will set
our winter training camp roster for the trip to Tampa over the next few
weeks and take the top-20. We will use this time to get stronger
physically, utilizing the rowing machines and working hard in the weight
room. We have to train hard these next few months
and be ready to go in the spring and work towards our next set of
goals, which includes trying to win conference again and advancing to
the NCAA.”
