• Drake's basketball wraps up its stay Sunday at the DIRECTV Classic against Xavier of Cincinnati.
• The contest is Drake’s first ever against
the Musketeers, a program that has made seven straight NCAA tournament
appearances and advanced to the Sweet 16 in four of the last five
seasons.
• Drake, playing in the consolation bracket,
advanced thanks to a 77-66 victory over Rice on Friday. Xavier, which lost
its tourney opener to Pacific, defeated Drexel in its second game.
• The loss to Pacific is Xavier’s only loss of the season.
• In Drake’s victory over Rice, senior Jordan
Clarke set a tournament record with a career-high 18 rebounds to go
along with his 15 points, eight of them coming at the free-throw line.
• He has also hauled in 10 or more rebounds in six of his last seven games dating back to last season.
• Ben Simons continued to pace Drake’s
offense with 18 points and four three-pointers in the win over Rice. The
senior currently has 989 points and is on pace to become the 23rd
Bulldogs to reach 1,000 career points.
• Drake’s offense is averaging 80.5 points per game, the 37th highest average in the nation.
• Drake is averaging 10 three-pointers per
game after making 11 against Rice. The team is shooting at a 45.5
percent clip from the three-point arc.
• Drake held a 36-28 advantage in rebounding over Rice, it’s first positive rebounding margin this season.
• In the victory over Rice, Drake scored a season-high 1.24 points per possession.
A victory would ...
• Make Drake 3-2 on the season.
• Give Drake a fifth-place finish in the tournament.
• Make Drake 1-0 against Xavier.
• Make Mark Phelps 65-70 at Drake.
• Be the 1,152nd victory in program history.
• Make Drake 2-2 away from home this season.
A Loss would ...
• Drop Drake to 2-3 on the season and 1-3 away from the Knapp Center.
• Give Drake sixth place in the eight-team tourney field.
• Make Drake 0-1 against the Musketeers.
