Who would've thought it possible? A week after Valley's girls' basketball team qualified for the class 5-A state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines, Valley's boys' squad pulled off a huge 51-48 upset Tuesday night over Ankeny Centennial to reach next week's class 4-A state tournament. The boys' team limped into the substate final at Ankeny High School with a 14-8 record and a season-long history of inconsistent play. Unbelievably, Valley was in control of Tuesday night's game most of the way after being thrashed by Centennial, 58-30, on Jan. 17. Valley utilized a ball-control offense and well-distributed scoring to keep Centennial off-balance throughout Tuesday night's game. Centennial closed the season with a 17-5 record. Valley plays Dubuque Senior [22-1] at 6:35 p.m. March 12 at Wells Fargo Arena in the state tournament. Senior is seeded No. 2, Valley is No. 7. Immediately after the Tigers wrapped up the victory over Centennial, the players had a brief emotional celebration on the court, but there was no prolonged affair like the one that took place after the girls' victory a week earlier. Indeed, boys' coach Jeff Horner chose to not have a postgame ceremony like the girls had when they won their regional final at Rockwell City. Each player took a turn at cutting down the net on one of the baskets. There was no net-cutting by the boys. But I'll bet there'll be plenty of net-cutting if the Tigers should do the improbable and seize the 4-A state championship. Well, we'll think more about that when, or if, the opportunity arises. Meanwhile, Valley's girls take a 22-1 record into Wednesday's 3:15 p.m. state tournament game against defending 5-A champion Southeast Polk [16-6]
