A Closer Look at the Valley Singers |
By RON MALY
There's nothing like a double-barreled collection of wonderful singing to warm the heart and the mind on a cool November evening.
Two sensational vocal groups--one of them the Valley Singers representing Valley High School in West Des Moines, the other the Nordic Choir representing Luther College in Decorah--provided 90 minutes of soothing sounds in front of a large audience at the Lutheran Church Of Hope in West Des Moines.
The Valley Singers, one of a half-dozen or more vocal groups at Valley High School, began the program under the direction of conductor Ryan Deignan, choral program co-director Haley Gibbons and collaborative pianist Susan Ihnen.
The 36-member Valley Singers, consisting of nine sopranos, nine tenors, nine altos and nine bass vocalists, performed With a Lily In Your Hand, Ballade, Johannes Brahms' Der Gang Zum Liebchen, i carry your heart, and Alleluia.
Conductor Allen Hightower of Luther College directs choral activities in a program that includes six choirs and 500 singers.
In recent years, I've made a habit of watching the Christmas At Luther productions on the Public Broadcasting System.
This was my first opportunity to be present for a production of Hightower's Nordic Choir.
The choir performed Beautiful River [Shall We Gather At the River], Ave Verum Corpus, Psalm 50, Grace before Sleep, Com Thou Fount of Every Blessing, On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand, All the Things You Are, and O Lord God.
In 2015, the Nordic Choir will do a midwest tour, followed by a tour of Italy.
Great sounds, all of it.
