Thoughts

By RON MALY

Some thoughts at mid-day.

A few about Lolo Jones and the Winter Olympics again.

A few about--what else?--the paper.

First, the Olympics women's bobsledding in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia.

Our own Lolo Jones, who shouldn't even have been on the team or made the trip, and partner Jazmine Fenlator finished 11th on the final day of the bobsled competition.

All in all, it was a tough day for the Americans.

Elana Meyers and Lauryn Williams of the U.S. finished a disappointing second behind Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse of Canada in the only competition that meant anything.

You already know my feelings about Jones being picked for the bobsled team, so I'll get off that subject quickly.

I have no desire to contribute anything else to the Lolo mania.

She still doesn't have an Olympics medal after failing as a hurdler in the Summer Games at Beijing and London, and now being a virtual no-show in the Winter Games as a bobsled pusher.

Jones had better hope those TV jobs she covets come quickly.

Now to the paper, which is always an easy target.

I can't for the life of me understand how the story of Drake's 70-67 basketball victory over Northern Iowa wound up all the way back on page 3 today.

Clearly, it should've been on page 1.

I don't have any idea what type of knucklehead makes decisions like that at that place anymore.

I can't figure out how the story on a basketball game that wasn't played wound up at the top of page 1, and a story about a game matching two teams from the state of Iowa that was played--detailing the most exciting game of the winter at the Knapp Center in Des Moines--was buried inside.

Actually, the story that should've been buried inside was the usual  cheerleader-type one about Jones being in 11th place after the first day of the bobsledding.

By the time it was in the paper, the news was nearly 24 hours old.

I guess all we can do is blame the new editor.

Until I hear otherwise, I'll hold her responsible for all the dumb things going on down there.
